It seesm like a nice idea but the fact that nothing has to happen till 2008 means that it can all appear to be on course for his re-election with no extra spending. Nice bit of electioneering if you ask me!

i would agree it is an election ploy. Except that NASA isn't very popular, hasn't being since mid 70's. and has gone down due to the 2 shuttle accidents.

Mission to Mars:
* Earth to Mars: Approx. 77 Million kms
* NASA Spirit Cost: Approx. 321 Million
* Launched: 10-06-2003
* Landed: Jan 2004
* Status: Working

Luas:
* Length of first two lines: Approx. 25kms
* Luas cost so far: Approx. 675 million
* Construction of Line A, commenced in September 1999
* Status: Not Working

:shock: Are those figures reall??? If so OMG, Ireland could have gone to Mars TWICE for the money we have poured into the LUAS ... and it doesn't even WORK!

But LUAS is averaging 27million per killometer, so the cost to Mars would be over two thousand million million. And since it is planned to take 10 years or so to get luas working thats 2.5km per year, so we would reach Mars in about 30 million years.

Building an underground system with a spoon, Great Escape style, would be quicker...
