New Horizons successfully launched

New Horizons has launced successfully - the Atlas/Centaur/Star booster combination worked flawlessly, the craft has successfully separated from the 3rd stage and has left Earth orbit. Congratulations to the launch team and the controllers up at Johns Hopkins in Maryland - here'shoping for a safe 9 year coast to Pluto!

New Horizons principal investigator Alan Stern confirms that ashes of Pluto discoverer Clyde Tombaugh are aboard the spacecraft. The American astronomer found Pluto in 1930.

Tombaugh's widow was at the launch as well today. Well done NASA.
