Guess you can see why Russian female cosmonauts have less than a snowball's chance in hell of flying a Soyuz mission.

But didn't Valentina Tereshkova go into space some 19 years before Sally Ride?

Pretty shocking that he can get away with that mind!

And it was 19 years before the next Soviet female cosmonaut, Svetlana Savitskaya, flew - and only to upstage the US, who had just announced that Sally Ride would fly on STS-7. Savitskaya flew again on Soyuz T-12 and perfomed an EVA, again to upstage the Americans - Kathy Sullivan was planned to do the first EVA by a woman on STS-41G later in 1984.

Only 3 Soviet/Russian female cosmonauts have flown - Tereskhova, Savitskaya and Elena Kondakova (wife of Valeri Ryumin, a former cosmonaut who at the time was in charge of Energia's manned spaceflight section). There have been quite a number of women cosmonauts in training groups over the years, the vast majority never got the chance to fly - such as Nadezhda Kuzhelnaya:

I suppose back then if the americans announced that they were going to do a first by eating a pizza in space the russians would go out of their way to beat them.

Challenged by a reporter, Perminov responded: "This isn't discrimination. I'm just saying that when a majority (of the crew) is female, sometimes certain kinds of unsanctioned behaviour or something else occurs, that's what I'm talking about."

...sexist, descriminatory, mysoginistic dynosaurs (these Russians)... Guys, you're missing the point - Pervinov is alluding to some really wild "Lez-fest" activity during re-entry. Now that's GOT to be worth catching on web-cam!!!
