There is a parachute between the baloon and the kit,
they mentioned somewhere that there was a wire tied around the rope and when they passed current through it it would heat up and cut the rope, I dont know if it was done remotely or at a predetermined time/height/location,
It appeared they were in the middle of nowhere and had enough clear land,
I suppose if it was waterproofed and sealed and it could float it could be done out to sea with a few boats on standby for the recovery, less dangerous!

Knowing the weather here we would probably lose it on it's descent
I wonder if,a big IF here, the likes of Dave Grennan and others could photograph it on the way up and down. On the mention of needing permission, we could just say that we are celebrating a Chinese wedding and release a few lanterns along side it to test wind speed etc.
I haven't had a chance to read their web site yet but how big was the overall apparatus on launch?

The Spanish teens used balloons from
www.kaymont.com/pages/home.cfm
.
Early morning is best for ascent as winds are generally lighter in the morning.

Very impressive!!
and by the looks of it not too difficult to do, just a little work and some airspace to do it with.
