Especially true when I was on on a dial-up connection.
However, there may be something in this...
I pinged the server (at 00:10am) and this is what I Got...
[code:1]Pinging heavens-above.com [129.247.177.14] with 32 bytes of data:
Request timed out.
Request timed out.
Request timed out.
Request timed out.
Ping statistics for 129.247.177.14:
Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 0, Lost = 4 (100% loss),[/code:1]
However - at the same time, I am using the Heavens Above site in Internet Explorer.
I didn't think a Ping which timed out, would show up as a working website.
Usually if it times out on a Ping, you cannot view the website
Weird !

Problem was DNS related alright, but a little closer to home. I was having a little difficultly the other night with my internet connection and put in the DNS settings for my eircom.net dial-up connection (have been working without any, for months now, with no problems!). It sorted the problem and I could connect again, to every web-site I tried, with one exception. Thing is, I miss-typed the alternate DNS. Strange that it only effected the Heavens-Above website.........
Anyway, sorted!

My thoughts exactly as regards the DNS point !

Some nasty people ignore the RFC specification of TCP/IP and block ping packets. This means that although such a server is still not returning pings.
People who do this should be shot IMO!!!

Thats something I hadn't considered.
Thanks for those details - I'm off to dig out my info on TCP/IP !
The internet police should consider your suggested punishment
