Possibly OT... Hard Disk question

OK - thanks for the info...

So, if I get an Adaptec ATA RAID 1210SA crad and two serial ATA drives, I'm onto a winner? Do I need to double check that my motherboard will be compatible, or does it even matter?

I don't want to go down the road of buying this stuff only to find it isn't compatible....

Sorry if I'm a bit behind on the PC hardware advances of the last 3 years...

By the way Bart - I really like the idea of an external drive, but the cost per gig seems to be way more than the internal drives. And all I'm really after is more storage. RAID gives me added security of course, but portability is not really an issue for me - but I hear ya! I saw the Maxtor 1TB external RAID device at the factory yesterday <drool>

PCWorld have had a good deal for the past few weeks (so probably due to end soon) - Toshiba 320GB Ext USB Hard Drive for €169.99. Only concern I'd have with it is that it's fanless. That would give me slight concern for it running a bit hot.

Thanks for that Brian - seems I could get a 600GB RAID system for about 300 euro. 170 for an external drive seems very good value though. But the heat thing would worry me too - but surely Toshiba would have that covered....

Can anyone tell me how I would find out if I have a '32-bit PCI bus' that is 2.2 compliant? That's what the Adaptec RAID card needs...

How quickly would you see yourself filling the disks Dave?
Rather than buying two hard drives now, how about buying one external one. When that's full in say two years time, the size of hard drives available then will be significantly bigger for the same money.
If it were me, I'd buy one external drive and only switch it on when I actually needed it to preserve life span and reduce chance of problems.
Just a thought...
