Hi,

From time to time some of you will have heard me going on about some software called xephem.

Details of the package are at www.clearskyinstitute.com/xephem/ Its a nice astronomy tool geared more towards doing actual work than producing nice OpenGL pictures.

Up to now its only been freely available for Unix users who can compile the program, however some time in the last year a utility called cygwin which lets you build unix apps on windows has actually started working correctly!

Cygwin, www.cygwin.com/ , is a set of tools that you install on a windows machine which gives you a virtual UNIX box. In effect you can bring up an xterm, and carry on just like you were on a solaris or linux box.

To get things working you will need to download and setup cygwin, you will need to include the gcc compiler and most of the Xwindows libraries. Then download xephem and follow the compilation instructions.

If people are interested I can write up more detailed install instructions.

Cheers,
~Al (still very disorientated from having a load of xterms on XP)
