Starmap Pro for iphone review was created by Frank Ryan
I was thinking this review might go into the Articles - Equipment Reviews section
but I can't see how to submit one so I will put it here....
For a time last night it became clear and steady so I took
the opportunity to try out a nice little application for a recently
acquired iPhone called 'Starmap'
www.star-map.fr/
If your not familiar with these phones
(it seems an insult to call these things a
phone because they are and have the potential to be so much more.)
the screen is around the same size as a satnav,
it is touch sensitive, has an tilt sensor and also the resolution is just
amazing.
I don't generally like Apple products but this is really something.
Basically this independent application is a cross between starry night & a sky scout.
At first I thought it would be gimmicky but the functions on this
app are as good as many full planetarium progs out there.
In fact it really is a full prog in its own right.
It has an excellent database and perfect for deep sky object hunters.
The tonights visible / planning / eyepiece function / scope functions
and all the rest of the tools are very easy to use.
www.star-map.fr/starmapProScreenshots.html
I spent quite a while with just this and my binos last night
simply 'star' hopping from object to object.
I would say I have a good knolowage of the sky for an amateur astronomer and can find my way around easily enough but this
little tool is going to be a real help in learning more.
Not like a go to where you let the computer do the thinking,
this is essentially a mapping / observational tool and you still must do
the work to find the objects.
The zoom & tilt functions are addictive in that you can hold up the screen to the sky and zoom out to the level that matches your field of view and
then you can pan up down left right and it will match the area you are looking at. Great fun altogether!

Frank,
I picked up a s/h iphone recently and have tried to get Starmap Pro software.
I have downloaded several free and not-so-free application so far via itunes with no problems.
However, for the life of me, I just can't download this one.
I have tried getting it several times over several days both through my iphone and through the PC and it just won't download.
Had you any problems?
I also note that, as apps for the iphone go, it is definetly on the expesive end of the market - €14.99 for the pro version or €9.99 for the ordinary version. Most apps I have seen so far are either free (of which there are many, albeit not as loaded with features) or cost up to approx €5. So, €14.99 is way other there, pricewise. However, if it does what it says, it would be a very useful program.
Difficult to buy it though if it won't download.
If I buy the regular one for a tenner, can I just upgrade for an extra fiver for the Pro version, or do I get hit by the full whack for upgrading?
Cheers,
Michael.

Hi Mike.
No, I did not encounter any issues downloading it.
Ya, it's expensive as apps go but most apps don't do as much as this one.
There was a 'skymap lite' version available for a time which was free to download,
I'm not sure if it's still available though.
I'm also not sure if you want to upgrade do you have to buy the full app again.
I was bought an itunes voucher as a present and as I don't use itunes for music
I just said, to hell with it and used the 15 euro on that app but I do agre it
is pricey.
Having said that, I have used it quite often in the field and find it a great little
tool. It's cool to have practically a PC in your pocket that has this planetarium prog on it.
There are a lot of free astro apps in the app store that are worth taking a look at also.

Was able to download it this morning.
Took ages to download, and that was via the WIFI network in the house, as it is a large program.
Very impressive though. Loads of features. Stars down to mag16.
You can customise virtually to your liking.
Good program!
Other programs well worth getting are:
Star Walk (€3.99)
Moon Map Pro (€2.39)
Michael.

Downloaded the Mooon map one...
nice one...
handy when out with binos I'd imagine.
I also got a free app - Planets.
a handy little app to tell you what is the best time
to view which planet.
also makes for a basic compass if you are ever stuck!
