Wireless network - how do I set it up for observing? was created by dmcdona
Folks - I now have a wireless network.
The setup I want is as follows:
1. Main PC in study, snug and warm, connected to network by ethernet.
2. Laptop in cold shed with wireless network adapter. Laptop connected to CCD via (longish) USB cable.
3. Me in study after setting scope/camera up.
So, how do I get to control the laptop from the PC in the study? I'm assuming it can be done...
Cheers
Dave

Hi Dave,
I was investigating this only a few weeks back.
Download VNC, and put it on both PCs.
This program allows you to see and control your laptop through your desktop PC. You can see the remote screen as if you were in front of the laptop.
BTW, this will work with any combo of PC/laptop, it doesnt matter, I tried it on a wired network.
Check out
ultravnc.sourceforge.net/
Once, you've installed the program, go through the VNC instructions on how to setup, its fairly easy.
Using this, I was able to remotely control the LX200 and webcam remotely.

David, did you look into other alternatives such as .net? Pros/cons?
Have fun,

Dave - what can I say! This works really well! I can control the Meade DSI from my study. The feedback to/from the laptop is almost instantaneous! What a fabulous package.
Now, how to get live images on the internet... That's the next step!
Thanks for pointing me in the right direction - I really appreciate it!
Cheers

I never got around to that, there are so many things at the moment that I'm "looking into", this one was left go until I really need it, which wont be for a while yet. I spent last weekend building a remote release cable for the Canon and I also modified my reticle eyepiece so its now powered directly from the scope, no more batteries and the week before I got a powersuppy+adapter for the etx70, the list goes on.....
Dave,
I'm glad the program works, its very impressive especially since its free.
Nortons which isnt free couldn't do what VNC does.

I have downloaded it and will look into it. I picked up the .net tip from the Lx200gps group. Am just starting to experiement with remote control. Interesting field :!:
