Hi all,
While out tonight having a look at the moon with the binoviewers, I had to get in a quick shot, even though its low in the sky this time of year, its worth having a look if you're outside. It's great to go observing and not freeze to death lol.

Thank you, Dave, for the brilliant image of the 12 day old Moon. Valerie and I observed it for a few minutes last night using Antonin Rukl's book Atlas of the Moon. In your photo, we also saw Kepler, Gassendi and as far I can make out the crater Delisle south west of Sinus Iridum hugging the terminator.

Hi Aubrey,
Rukl's atlas is a good book, one I never managed to add to my collection, glad you got a view of the moon last night. I thought the seeing was good considering its altitude.
I used to use the "times atlas of the moon" at the eyepiece but now use a PC program for this, don't want to risk those auld valuable rare atlases on a damp night.
Have you seen the price of Rukl's book on amazon

Great shot Dave of the Moon ... the splatter pattern around Copernicus is really obvious and Tycho's rays too.
"Moon, Mars, and Venus" (also by Antonin Rukl) is the book that preceded his A4-size atlas. MMV is pocket-sized and has the exact same number of maps and crater notes as all later volumes. The difference is the map colours and a handful of slight updates. You can pick up MMV pretty cheaply on www.bookfinder.com ... I must have bought at least 15 copies for less than €5 each over the years and gave them to different people.
Wil Tirion told me before that all the Rukl books, Sky & Telescope Moon charts, etc are based on an original map done by Rukl a few decades ago!
Talk soon,
John
