It must have been stunning, for those on the expedition, to actually see it happening.

There is nothing to beat actually seeing a total solar "in the flesh". Hopefully I will be seeing my 4th from Libya in 2006. The recent web cast just made me more excited about the trip next year.

To Dave,
To webcast the partial solar on 3rd October this year you would have to have a clear view to the horizon at around 0747 when first contact occurs. The sun will be 10 degrees up into the morning sky. A filter would have to be used unless like the Japanese in Panama you had enough cloud to do the filtering for you! I hope to be in Spain for it where I will have a much better chance of less cloud and the eclipse will be annular there anyway.
