David,
YOu can use the cam just as a toucam. However it is modified to take exposures up to 16 sec.
Up to now you can not use it to guide the scope, but I think people are working on that issue.
Follow thye autostarsuite group on Yahoo groups if you are interested.
regards
Jouke

Jouke,
Thanks for that, I was going by the Meade add where it says its used with an autostar. I didnt do any further investigation.
What size is the CCD chip ?

regarding the issue of the new version of the toucam, here's what one person on cloudynights.com said about it:
"I own both webcams and am planning to a short review of both of them. I've taken both of them apart to see if the electronics are identical. This is NOT the case; the PCB is the same and as far as I can see the CCD is the same. The PROII however, has a newer version of the main chip and is missing one chip. This chip is probably now integrated in newer version of tha main chip.
This does not influence the modding capabillity as far as i know because the timing chip is still there.
How far this influences optical capabilities I don't know; I see no difference on daytime recordings and had no chance to test it's astro capabilities"
Hope this is of use.

From what I could see in the shop,
ther new version is in a rectangular silver case,
going for the compact camera look as opposed to the white webcam on my monitor look.

I think I read somewhere that the new cam has a faster frame rate. Maybe someone with both types could could confirm/deny this.
