One question to you deep sky cadets :D

Is this an achromat?? I think it is. I'd love an apo, but it all down to the bucks!

Thanks, Keith.

Keith,

This is an achromat, no doubt. If your looking for something a bit better without remortgaging your house then why not consider the 80ED refractor. This is one of those new breed of "semi-apos" which have become so popular of late. Alternatively William Optics have a lovely 80 mm semi apo too.

I'd imagine its an acromat, it certainly could not be a full apo at that price.
IS it good for imaging ??? a good question, what class of object would you have in mind.

I have a 4" F5 refractor and it is fine for imaging deep sky (massive wide field) piggy backed on my LX, but it is out of the question for planets. Now this scope is a 6" F8, I'd imaging you'll need to use a barlow for the planets using a webcam and you will probabily get chromatic abberation to some degree which will give you a colour halo around the planets, meaning more work in photoshop to remove.

As for deep sky, slap on the 300D or DSI and I'd imagine you'll get decent images through it, optically speaking. From the AD I dont see any PEC programmability in the mount, so you will need to get an OAG or piggyback scope or guide through its autoguider port.
With abit of work, Id imagine you could get some good DSOs with it, but I'd bet it wont be straight forward.

To sum up,
For planets, the optics will be the problem, "chromatic abberation"
For deepsky, the mount will be the problem, " tracking ability"

I hope this helps.
