Well depeding on how you feel about forking out huge wadges of cash and what OS you like using I would have two pieces of advice.
If you like the idea of open source software OR use Linux as your OS OR don't feel like spending vast wodges of cash then you should consider the GIMP. It's free and available on Windows, Mac and Linux. It has pretty much the same power as Photoshop but the meues etc are laid out quite differntly so that if you are used to photoshop you will be confused and hence grumpy!
If on the other hand you don't mind forking out a few hundred quid AND use Windows or Mac then Adobe Photoshop or Corell Paint Shop Pro X are your best options. Photoshop would be the better product but more expensice while PSP is still an excellent product but a bit cheaper. Neither are cheap though.
Best of luck with it,
Bart.

PS. If your work is primarily involved with the solar system and where the weapon of choice is the webcam, then all you probably need is Registax V3 which is also free (a real bargain!).

There's lots of version of the Adobe stuff so the chances are the free version you have is too under-powered for your needs here.

For quick and easy processing, all you need in photoshop is the "levels" option, if the freebee version has that, then you're alot of the way there.
I would not dismiss photoshop just because you have to pay for it.
