Matthew, for the type of photos you take the gimp (free) will do pretty much everything you need. The only problem is theres a reasonably steep learning curve involved in astro processing. Have a look a Jerry lodriguss's site he has a lot of good info there

Over the christmas period I do plan to write a few articvles on imaging and processing mainly to document the procedures that Jed and myself employ. I will be including some detail on, for example, reducing light pollution etc. Maybe you will find these useful too.

Matthew,
Depends on your goals.
If you will be doing alot of DSLR / CCD imaging then something like (in no order);
ImagesPlus
K3ccd
DSLRfocus
MaximDL (several offerings by price)
Would be the way to go. They are cheaper than Photoshop and much more functional along the lines you will need.
Photoshop would be a better general purpose graphics package though.
Later,
Jed.

The developers of Maxim Dl have a new program on the market now called MaxDSLR. Specifically aimed at the digital slr market. It can take long exposures and autoguide at the same time. After taking the images, it can then process them. A very complete program.
