Heres an image from last night.
Seeing was reasonable - 40% Moon in the sky throughout. Transparency was Reasonable to Good (deteriorated a little later in the session)
Note NGC 4562 in upper right of image.

Great detail Dave. Looks like you worked hard to get that one - 21 exps and dark frames. Only negative comment I suppose I would ahve is the illuminated circle in the centre of the frame. Other than that though, fab image.

Dave - serious vignetting there but you just got the main galaxy in. Some nice detail in the dust lanes and you've kept the core intact. I see a big dust mote to the lower left of the core and more to the upper right end of the glaxy. There seem to be some vertical streak artifacts across the whole image or is that my monitor?

Time for flats old boy... :D

Nice shot though and thanks for sharing.

Thanks for the comments guys.

Dave: Can you have a look at the version below and tell me what this looks like on your monitor. I had to bring my brightness and contrast levels all the way up to see the artifacts you mention.

Which one looks better to you guys?

hmm time for a new 19" LCD methinks!! (thats me BTW)

Dave,
well done on capturing that image.
with my monitor brightness and contrast up full, I can just see the vertical artifacts that Dave McD refers to.
Excellent detail in the galaxy, tiny tracking error, but a great image.

That second image is better but the background now seems to be a tad too dark. Though the galaxy has kept its original detail pretty much. As ever, trade-offs abound.

I think I can see the artifacts because I use two monitors - one is set slightly brighter than the other so I can see the artifacts in my own images which I then process out as best I can. I then review on the 2nd monitor to see pretty much what they'll look like on the web.

I've struggled with the same problems as you though and there's not much you can do about it unless you win the lotto... That's the nature of the beast

Cheers
