Sun image, practice for the upcoming eclipse. was created by dave_lillis
Well, its only 10 days away now, and I just cant wait !
Since the weather was good today, I spent the entire afternoon practicing with the canon and the scope and camcorders.
For my setup (canon 300d +4" refractor), an iso speed of 100 and expsoure of 1/400 seems good, the below image is from stacking 10 images in registax, alot of cropping was done as the field of view is over 3 degrees.
I hope this will be good enough to catch any flares visible, it just about cought that sunspot group near the center, has anyone else tried this afternoon??
For all camcorder users out there going to the eclipse, I had to step down the aperture of the camera with a mask when I used the baader film, so as not to over expose the sun image, I'm really glad I discovered this now and not at the eclipse site. The camera was set to full manual and the gain down as low as possible.

You will need a longer or shorter exposure during totality I presume to catch the corona. Then, there is a setting whereby you can bracket the exposures so that you'll get three images instead of just one and should give a better dynamic range of the corona.

my thoughts exactly, so it'll be a mad rush for the first minute to get those set of pictures, I dont intend spending all of totality getting pictures.

Hence me pringing the laptop and letting software take the set of bracketed exposures. All I need to do is connect everything and point the camera at the sun. How hard can that be?
