Michael,
Given the recent bout of adverse weather here locally in Greece, I decided to be more productive and spend some time on the red planet.
I have seriously thought about a little trip to the equator to pursue the two possible horizontal (!) analemmas where one half of the analemma is below the horizon whereas the other half is above the horizon (take any of my analemmas and splice them in the middle along the long axis and then turn the result onto its side).
However, the only thing holding me back is the choice of (twelve) nations which hover on the equator. Otherwise I would invest the time and effort for the world's first horizontal analemmas (one is possible during very early morning and the other is possible during late afternoon).

PS. In fact I should have directed you to my avatar and then simply requested you to image the analemma approaching the horizon (towards the left) and you will get an idea of how the horizontal analemma would look like.

PPS. Something very attractive about the horizontal analemma project is that it requires (obviously?) only one half as long to complete ... the smaller loop would be mid-April to June 21 and the larger loop would be Aug 31 (same as mid-April since the intersection point between the two loops is the same) and Dec 21.
Damn, the more and more I think about it, the more enticing it is to pursue it. I am a blad influence on myself.
