Nice image Paul.
One small thing (and this is meant as constructive feedback), there are some "white snow caps" in the image, maybe some of the levels in registax were pushed a tiny bit too far ?
The second image brightness is also much better The mosaicing is very good, I don't see where the images were joined up.

Yes, I think sharpening of whatever sort, be it wavelets or USM is always a bit double-edged in that it can bring out more detail but also cause an artificial look.
Somewhere is the perfect compromise but in the meantime it's all just experimentation
