Raw Mode - Astrophotogrpahy was created by Neill
Hi all,
I have an astrophotography question. I have taken a number of pictures with my 350D in raw mode including some from the eclipse on Sat. Yesterday I tried to take a look at them on my laptop by connecting the camera using a USB lead. The JPG images I have taken on my camera appeared, but not the raw images. What is the problem here? Do you have to save the raw images as a certain type of file? How will I be able to view them and see which are good and able to be processed and which are to be binned.
Thanks
Neill

Neill,
To view the RAW files, you need software that can read that format of a file. There are a number of free conversion software programs available on the net - not sure if Canon do one or not. For astrophotography, you are FAR better off taking the images in RAW rather than JPG - much more detail in the RAW as the compression required to reduce to file to a JPG removes alot of the very faint detail, which is particularly important for astrophotography.
Hopefully someone here will chime in with a link to a program they use.
Hope this helps,

If you look on the CD that came with your 350D there is a program that allows altering and converting RAW images.
Later,
Jed.

I had a similar situation, when viewing RAW files in windows XP. They are treated as hidden files when viewing the camera files directly on the camera through XP.
What you need to do is to switch on the "show hidden files" option button.
1. Open any folder on your machine
2. Tools menu > Folder options
3. Click on the "view" tab.
4. In the "hidden files and folders" section click on the option button for "Show hiden files and folders"
In terms of converting RAW files into Tiffs or JPEGS, I use Digital Photo Professional that came with the 350D
Hope this helps

If you don't already have Digital Photo Professional you can download it from the Canon website.
