I've long considered just how worthwhile a really long luminance image would be in the overall scheme of things. To test this I took this 3.5hr long sequence of 7.5min subs. I do think the extra effort was worth it.
Heres the image, usual kit, details under the image

My next task is to capture RGB data for this. I'm wondering what will be optimal I'm thinking 90mins per channel. Comments?

Dave - beautiful! This galaxy looks like it's bursting with star forming H-alpha activity in the arms. Can't wait to see it in full colour!

The arm detail is magic!, the arms would be amazing in colour given all those h-alpha regions as Phil mentioned.
There seems to be a slight tracking error, the stars are slightly elongated left to right, but then given the amount of exposures there, its not totally unexpected.

Dave - those eggy stars are doing my head in. I'm wondering if its the processing software (registration) that's to blame?
Do you have any other registratiohn software to compare the processing to (eg Registax, Maxim etc)?
Either that or you're gonna have to autoguide, improve your alignment or take shorter subs.
Lovely detail in the galaxy. Imagine how much better it would be if the tracking was better...
Cheers

That's an excellent image Dave! Super detail in the arms.
Whilst there is *slight* "eggyness" (such a word? ) it's not something I noticed too much to be honest.
Now go get some colour!!
