David, I think it's actually just saturation of the chip that caused that. It gets worse during processing. I had to heavily crop the image to remove two stars that exhibited quite a bit of blooming. I was also a bit out of focus which didn't help.
If you wanted to do that manually the Astronomy Tools action set for photoshop has a "Select Brighter Stars" function.
