Southern hemisphere was created by cobyrne
Just back from my second visit to Madagascar. Took over 1,200 photographs - here are some of the astronomy-related ones.

Sunset from Morondava

We then saw a Green Flash (honest!) - this is the best photo I have of it -

We also saw the large and small Magellanic Clouds -

- and, of course, the glorious southern-hemisphere Milky Way -

The Southern Cross over a moonlit Malagasy countryside -

Finally, the constellations were upside-down, which made sky navigation surprisingly difficult! I found myself taking a photo, calling up the image on my camera, then turning my camera upside-down.

M31 is in this image

There is a fairly obvious M45 here, but can you figure out the surrounding stars without turning the picture upside-down?

The constellation Lyra is in this image. Can you identify it and the surrounding stars?

I still have a few shots of the night sky that I cannot identify - maybe I should put them up here as a competition? :)

Hi,
Impressive images there, and how right you are about it been surprisingly difficult to make out upside-down constellations.
1200 images!!, your poor camera!

Great shots which bring back happy memories of my eight trips to Australia (and 2 to NZ) - it's a terrific sky isn't it? Of particular note, I like the shot of Crux setting with Alpha and Beta Centauri following, and of course you have caught my favourite sky object 47 Tucanae just adjacent to the SMC.

Go on, put up the mystery pics :-)

Incidentally, I found it reasonbly easy to identify familiar constellations upside down, but the two more confusing things were the upside down Moon and the fact that the Sun goes the "wrong" way around the sky setting down and to the left, not down and to the right.

Some fantastic images there! Personally I love the sunsets. Oh ... and my neck hurts from trying to figure out those constellations :)

Wow! Brilliant images there, they really caapture the imagination, like Paul, I agree that the shot of crux over the moonlit countryside is super, they are so lucky in that part of the world!

In the constellation lyra shot, that cygnus to it's right, the top half of the cross is upside down
