NGC 7814 - Edge on Galaxy in Pegasus. was created by DaveGrennan
Here's a quick one from last night from frames taken in between some asteroid imaging. I haven;t had much images up of late cause I've been busy not only with the astrometry but also refitting the observatory with a new computer and software. The image below was taken with the excellent ACP (Advanced Control Panel) software from DC3 dreams. This is basically a complete automation suite for an observatory. One of the beauties of this software is it uses plate solving techniques to repeatedly position the mount to a very high level of accuracy. This means I can now go off and image asteroids and while the scope is idle go off and capture some data like the one below. All done completely hands off.

Anyway NGC7814 is between 40 - 55 million light years distant from us and is a lovely example of an edge on galaxy. Very reminiscent of a mini sombrero to me.

Hey Dave you must be excited with the up grade to the observatory. As for the image i dont think i've seen that galaxy before it'a real beauti, i can see what you mean by it's comparison to the sombrero. You've managed a great capture, love the dust lane so prominent, btw what do you think of the Q-guider i just ordered one yesterday from mordern astronomy should be here in a few days.

oh wise man why is the universe so perfect?ah because symmetry loves herself.

Dave that is a beaut of an image. Had hoped to catch up with you at the Whirlpool. Maybe next star party?

Thanks dogstar. I absolutely love the Q-Guider. In some tests I've done, I can comfortably guide on a mag 11.7 star with a 2.5 second exposure. There were a lot of driver issues which are now ironed out. Both myself and a few others who bought one of the initial batch spent many an evening beta testing drivers. The inbuilt guideport is fantastic and completely does away with the need for all those messy guideport interfaces.

Now the scary stuff. Did you check with Bernie that he actually has one in stock? The reason I ask this is because my understanding was the waiting list for these was running somewhere between 4-6 months. Maybe Bernie has gotten a few. I hope so! Even at that the q-guider is worth every second of the wait. You won't be sorry you got it!

Thanks DeeBee, your having a laught right. You must have read the posts where I was talking about having imaged NGC 7331 about 4 or 5 times before finally getting an image I wasn't ashamed to post!
