What software (akin to Registax) is best to stack stills? was created by Seanie_Morris
Having begun my journey into exposure stellar photography, I was playing around with Registax 4 late last night to see if I could do anything before my eyes gave way to extreme tiredness. Reluctantly, I failed. This evening, I see that R4 itself doesn't come with a "help manual". There are lots of 3rd party ones on the net. But, as a quick-fire question, what software do any of you use to stack stills, not avi's, to get nice images?
Thanks,
Seanie.

Registax stacks bmps and jpegs as readily as AVIs, have a look at
www.irishastronomy.org/boards/viewtopic.php?t=5655
and if you follow it, you'd be well on the way to getting a good resultant image.

Deep Sky Stacker.
deepskystacker.free.fr/english/index.html
I'm on the lower slopes of the learning curve with this one but it has already given me some great images from a handful of images.

Deepsky stacker is the main package to use for deep sky objects and stacking of frames. It works best with files in raw format although I think it will also stack bmps and jpegs (have never checked this).
registax does not derotate the frames prior to stacking which will be very important if you are taking shots over a long period.
You could also try IRIS but I find that the user interface is very difficult to master although I uunderstand that when you get used to it is is a very powerful piece of software.
Another is "rot n stack" though I have never used it. Here is the link
