Can a Canon XXXD be used for LRGB imaging? was created by Seanie_Morris
Just thinking back to Dave Grennan's For Sale thread on the ATIK camera in lieu of a monochrome camera, and I wanted to ask...

Can my Canon 350D be used in some sort of a similar fashion for LRGB astrophotography? I mean, it has a black and white setting, and then, I can insert RGB filters one at a time into my eyepieces.

Curious as to what the answers and suggestions would be.

Are you saying astro photographs are taken in B&W and then different levels of RGB added?

If so thats good to know.

If not................

carry on.

Seanie,

Now you cant use a colour camera for LRGB imging. Colour CCD's already have tiny little rgb filters over each pixel in a matrix. So if you used say a red filter the pixels which are covered by green and blue microfilters would receive very little or no light and would be black. When you colour converted this image the dark green and blue pixels would affect the red pixels.

The reason for LRGB imaging is really because the tiny micropixels (bayer matrix) covering the CCD are not as efficient as pure interference filters which are used for LRGB imaging.

That make sense?

PJ: All digital cameras are mono even your point and shoot camera. It's just that in colour cameras there is this bayer matrix of microfilters over each pixel and the internal software interpolates the colour from the data received through each filtered pixel.

Guys have a read of this article which explains better than I can.

Nice quick response Dave, thanks. It does make sense, and my prior knowledge of how a colour works helps! Would I be correct in saying that according to your description, I could *try* LRGB imaging, but would get a very pixellated-and-such image due to some light areas 'lost'?

Of course you can try but, without putting too fine a point on it you would be making matters worse and not improving anything! You would be further reducing the light hitting the CCD and not increasing it which is the whole point in LRGB imaging.

Yes as you say each frame would be significantly darker than if you just used the camera without LRGB filters and would be also significantly noisier.
