Hi Tony,
Actually, I've never managed to capture a flare. They are really really quick very bright. They look like massive explosions when captured on camera and usually occur around sunspots. Some guys on CloudyNights posted a few amazing animations of flares in the past.
The proms are (I believe) superheated plasma that just hang above the Sun's surface (but far cooler than the rest of the material in the Corona). They last much longer anywhere from hours to a few days or more, but we only see them as proms when they are on the edge of the disc, otherwise the appear as filaments and look like they are part of the solar disc itself.
I'm sure others will correct me if I'm wrong.
Thanks,
Trev

Nice job. Solar pics never cease to amaze me. Love the fact you put the earth to scale in the pics....very nice touch.

I've constructed a solar filter to look at the sun. I dont believe it will allow me to see Proms however. Sun spots maybe.
I was reading on Cloudy Nights a thread about solar scopes (SCT's)?
Seems to be a lot of problems with certain ones. The lens changing colour etc.
I'd love to invest in one but after reading that thread...........couldnt see it happening.
Anyways i'm on a mission to save up for an 8" Vixen VMC200.
Anyways...............nuff bout that. Back to these great Proms pics.
