Hi Trevor, that's an amazing picture!
A couple of questions as a "Sun newbie", if you don't mind?
1. What equipment are you using
2. What's a balrog? All I can find is LotR references!

Hi Galactus.
It's a Coronado PST - it's basically an all in one starter h-alpha scope. A nice wee scope for the price (most ha scopes are 1200 or above) but it's only 40mm.
By the way there's a new player hitting the market in a couple of months called Lunt Solar. They are releasing a 60mm scope for around the same price.
I just saw an incredible shot of the same proms by Greg Piepol over on CloudyNights. He's using a 90mm ha setup. Amazing stunning stuff!

That's the one alright. I stared at it so long that the dark patches in the main prom almost looked like a distorted face, reminded of Tolkien's fire demon, so I darkened those areas a wee bit. I've been staring at the screen too much methinksWhat's a balrog? All I can find is LotR references

Hi Trevor
A Coronado, I suspected as much! I've got a book on these recently and am going to purchase one soon.
I hope you don't mind a follow-up question - what camera do you use?
BTW, that book is "Observing the Sun with Coronado(tm) Telescopes (Patrick Moore's Practical Astronomy)" which I purchased after reading "The Sun Kings" a book I'd highly recommend
