Only question I woud have though is whether the CG5 would be good enough for lng-exposure astrophotography with an 8" SCT (FL=2000mm). Astro imaging is very unforgiving of mounts.

Michael, I used a similar setup (C9.25" and CG5) it worked out just fine. The nearby railway line was my problem, I needed something bigger to cope with the vibrations the trains caused. Then I also wanted that bit of a wider field, hence the f/4 scope.

I wouldn't envisage too many problems with an autoguided 8" SCT on a CG5.

One issue I have with mounts in the class of a CG5 is the accuracy of the goto. Fine for visual use but doesn't always put the object on a CCD. Hence you many find yourself wanting to upgrade at a later time.

Hi Dave,

I Was just reading that info on your site. Down the road (A good while off as yet!) I may be looking at something more permanent, but Ill walk before I can run.

BTW: Your site is very useful info for the newby to astro imaging.

Cheers,

Thanks Gary, I'm glad you found it useful. When you get to thinking about something more permanent you will be more than welcome to come over and have a look at the setup here.
