If you look closely at it you have also picked up the comet?

I don't think so, if you look at a map for the comets position today it is right behind the big pine tree in the foreground.

No, Comet Macholz is hidden behind the tree in the centre of the pic close to the bottom of the image.

With the 300D at 18mm you can easily push the exposure up to 60 secs without obvious egging.
Now that I have the hang of guiding I will try Orion at 18mm on a 5 min exposure. Someday.
