Sydney moon was created by johnomahony
Hi

Just got back home from a frantic two week trip to Australia via Singapore and Hong Kong. I took this rather pathetic shot of the daytime moon through a simple olympus snap camera. The moon phases look a bit odd when you see then down under the first time.

It was great to see Jupiter so bright and high up in the twilight sky. Of the 11 days we were in Sydney and Adelaide, every single night was crystal clear!!!!! Paid a visit to the Bintel astronomy shop in Sydney while I was there-very friendly place. I managed to see the new 16" GSO truss Dob there.

Only managed to get one picture of a star in Hong Kong;) . Not a place for Astronomy

Welcome back home John.
That phase does indeed look weird.
I guess we here can only console ourselves with the fact that
Jupiter is on the rise over the next few years here.

well John,
I'm glad you got to see some sky there, did you see any night time sky there ?
How do telescope prices there compare to here ?

Hi Dave

I only got to see the sky from the city and the moon was up. The light pollution was pretty bad but jupiter was very clear.
The scope prices are fairly high although the GSO and Skywatcher stuff seemed quite reasonable. Lots of EQ5 and EQ6 mounts. Meade, Celestron, Televue stuff is expensive.
The Aussie dollar took a major dive in value when we arrived-would have been a good time to buy stuff with the money we saved before the prices were re-adjusted.

Hi John,

I hope you had a great time down under. It is a dream of mine to go there and image the skies. Just one thing stopping me is the flight over I hate flying:unsure: . Well done on the snaps.

Carl.

Thanks Carl.
I know what you mean about flying. The Qantas jet that had the rapid descent causing serious injuries left Singapore the same evening as our Qantas flight to Sydney.
