Dear group,

The dwarf galaxy NGC 147 in Cassiopeia and member of the Local Group is one of approximately 60 galaxies for which (extragalactic) globular clusters have been detected. More specifically, NGC 147 has been found to contain four clusters dated to be approximately 9 billion years-old and ranging in magnitude from 16.98 to 21.10. They are appropriately named Hodge I to IV and after the principal author of the 1976 paper which described their properties.

For a result based on four hours total time and which includes these four extragalactic globular clusters, please see www.perseus.gr/Astro-DSO-NGC-0147-GCS.htm and remember to click on the hyperlinked image for the same result but with better scale.

Back in a few days with another member of the Local group but with eight member globular clusters.

Clear skies!

Anthony.

Extragalactic globulars, thats very cool. !!
Thanks for showing us objects that we have no hope of seeing any other way.
Any idea would these globulars compare to the likes of M13 or omega centauri in terms of star count?

Very nice result Anto. I was imaging 147 and its sister dwarf 185 last night but at F6 so I doubt if I have the globs.

If you get a chance have a go at 185 which has some very interesting central detail.

Dave,

It is my understanding that some of these have been resolved down to the core and hence for the initial suspicion that they are globulars and which have been confirmed since then for this to be the case. However, I am not aware, regrettably, if any estimates are available or not.

Kieran,

In my original posting above, I make the comment "Back in a few days with another member of the Local group but with eight member globular clusters" .... as in NGC 185!

You read my mind!

Hurry up mate I have started drooling. I had read that there is some supernova structure in there, definetly dark structure from the image I took but this gets easily lost in processing.
