The lunar crater Archimedes and surrounding areas.

The closest man-made object to Archimedes Crater is Luna 2, which is also the first man-made object to land on the moon. Luna 2 was the second of a series of spacecraft launched by the Soviet Union to explore the moon. Its 390-kilogram instrument package crashed on the surface of the moon on September 14, 1959, between the Archimedes and Autolycus Craters.

The closest humans have come to Archimedes Crater was during the Apollo 15 mission, whose landing site was at the base of the Apennine Mountains about 200 kilometers southeast of the crater's centre. Image taken from Cherrymount, Waterford, Ireland.

Excellant photo. What sort of magnification are you working at here?

Thanks for the encouragement folks.

Steve: I used a monochrome DMK camera with an Infra red blocker and Red filter attached, connected to a Celestron CGE 11 inch SCT to take the images. Its actually a mosaic attempt with a variety of images stiched together. Each image was a stack of the best 1000, out of 3000 - 4000 taken for each target. Stacking was done using Registax, stitching by Autopano Pro and final tweeks in Photoshop.

Donal: Hard to tell the magnification, but the DMK has a field of view similar to about a 10mm eyepiece (or there abouts) in my setup, therefore about 270x magnification (thats a very rough estimate..... I really have got to work out the maths, for a more accurate assessment), however, the image is a mosiac of a few images, and Flickr seems to have a limitation on the maximum sizes it can accomodate (the orginal is somewhat larger).

Keith: Many thanks. Did ya make it down here over the Christmas??????

Best regards

Steve
