Finally got to give this first light. Unfortunately clouds and poxy night meant I could only test the focusing, but it seems to work. A clear night and a dark sky may may yet give me a chance to test it further. Sorry I haven't posted in a while, been up to my neck in work...........
Inside focus:
Proper focus:
Outside focus:
OK, so now its time to make a tricky small one for my 300mm lens.:S - looks like more cut fingers, bugger..: blink:

Very clear demonstration of the Bahtinov effect - congrats.
I attempted to make one 10 or so days ago - not so successful.
Not being particuarly DIY competant I attempted to print on paper - cut paper - laminate - cut laminated mask - and placed in a picture frame with four door stops screwed to frame. Plastic probably allows cleaner cuts so I shall revisit.
I could identify when target was in focus but not as precisely as the method promises (and possibly no better than alternative focuing methods) - I did not get the shifting pattern on either side of focus.
I think that clean sharp cuts are essential - and the glass of the picture frame probably wasn't helping either.
However, I believe milage may be had from the concept of using the picture frame and door stops to mount a mask.
Also if one can cut the backing material of a picture frame cleanly then one can have a rigid material ready made to fit the frame.
How did you mount your frame and would it be rigid?
Mark

Mark - no frame used. The plastic is rigid enough not to require a frame. As for fixing it to the scope I simply used electrical tape. As your only going to be using it for a few minutes at a time this is sufficient for my purposes. I might try your doorstops fixed to the plastic as a permanent solution, but that might actually reduce the life of the mask as once I am finished it currently slips back into a pocket in the laptop bag.
