What DSLRs for astrophotography? was created by philiplardner
Hi Folks,
My venerable compact digital camera has finally coughed up its last and I am considering buying a DSLR. My new camera phone is already more powerful than the old compact but I would like something capable of taking much better daylight images that could be used on the scope as well. So if I could pick your collective brains...
What are the current hot models in the DSLR world that can be successfully modded for astrophotography?
and...
What are the best second hand (previous generation) DSLRs for day/astro shooting, and what issues or noise problems do they suffer from?
I'm heading off on hols in mid-june, so I need to pull the finger out on this one!
Thanks,
Phil.

I have a Canon 450D and its the biz. The live view function makes star focusing a breeze. Good sensitivity and a good battery life too.

Definitely get a camera with live view. With the new Canon 500D coming out the 450D's have come down in price, especially from the UK with the current exchange rate.

Like John, the Canon 450D would be my choice.
The price on these cameras has fallen dramatically.

Thanks guys - I was pretty sure the 450D was still the hot product of the Astro-DSLR world but wanted to check!
What would you consider to be a reasonable price for a new body (or body and standard 50mm lens)? I'm seeing prices on eBay (listed 'buy it now' ) from $565 and up for the body only (eBay.com) - £415 for body and 18-55mm lens(eBay.co.uk.)
Phil.

I got mine on Pixmania in December for €560 including the standard lense-had to wait a few weeks though before I received it.
You could try the digital camera company or Dixons/currys UK
