Excellent take on this by switching to the opposite side for the Moon rise.
I often like to plan out these kind of shots also
(using starry night / google earth and a bit of driving around)
to scout out nearby locations.
Weather here has always let me down (well you just get 12 or so go's a year to
get the full Moon rise shots)
But I hear you when you say it's good fun doing the beforehand work.

A canon 100-400m zoom lens and a 2x tele extender would get you most of the way there.
Would also give you a wide range of focal lengths.
Of course, you would be limited to using it with a canon camera, as opposed to a ccd camera.
Michael.
Michael,
I am going by shear memory and, as a result, I may be way off. However, I think about a year ago I saw a Canon L telephoto lens with 1000mm focal length selling for $100,000 and which was supposedly one of only two ever produced.
I can get the same focal length with my Tak FSQ + Astro-Physics 2x APO barlow.
