This is similar to the level of detail to view in the eyepiece.

I hope you're right.

Re the other thread on DMK settings, I see what you mean. I needed to play with the Gain, Exposure and Gamma in order to capture all the detail in the prom. Each prom will have a different level of brightness and dynamic range, hance why one setting won't work with all.

In an effort to get the spicules in the image a bit better, I tried processing an image from few minutes earlier in the morning. This is a single image processed to bring out both the disc and the proms. Proms not quite as clear as the one in the first post but spicules are bit more realistic looking here.

I can say its does resemble the eyepiece view through your h-alpha setup, having seen through it a few weeks back,
