Hi Everyone,
I managed to get out imaging for the first time in a while. I had my brother in law out as my new imaging assistant as he wants to learn the night sky. I decided we would image the elephant trunk nebula. I left this image in high resolution because I think it looks better that way.
Image was taken on Friday the 22nd & 23th of August 2010 and was a 3 hour exposure you all know the set up buy now
Please click on image to enlarge

Here is Jimmy my new imaging assistant:whistle: making sure everything is working fine in the observatory. You can see the scope pointing high up over head in the constellation Cepheus.

Fabulous image Carl, even in B&W. The detail in the nebulosity is stunning. Even the thumbnail has a sense of a massive area of space as there is so much stellar dust and so many stars...

Well done Jimmy - that's an excellent image. If you look at the top right corner, there seems to be a bit of star elongation going on. Funny how the other three corners show pinpoint stars. Probably something Carl messed up for you.
The central subject is just awesome. Stunning, crisp detail - and I really like the grayscale. I've seen colour images of this subject and it seems to overwhelm the subject.
Anyhow - well done.
Keep them coming and keep Carl on his toes - he can be quite lazy at times. A general dig every now and then will do the trick.

Excellent pic Carl and Jimmy
Shows lovely pockets of cool interstellar dust and gas. I like the embedded, dark, tendril-shaped clouds within the obscuring cosmic dust. Its certainly a good close-up of part of the wide field.
It's also a great candidate for narrowband imaging. To bring out
the emissions in different elements.
Well done!
