James,
I have Photoshop CS which can handle RAW conversions. It's just that there are several options in the conversion process I'm not sure which one to select.

Options? That's strange. From bitmap to compressed, I can understand. What are you converting the RAW to?

I normally convert to TIFF.
However, when I open a RAW image, here are my options.
Note that there are two files. One has a drop-down menu open.

Should I just accept default values or do I need to adjust something first before clicking "OK"?

I'm guessing here as I'm a Paint Shop Pro user.

If you are opening a file and your program wants to convert straight away then it might be converting to its proprietory format, which seems to be Adobe RGB (bottom left). Am I right?

I would convert to Tiff with a standalone program before going near the post-processing software such as PS. At least then you will have a baseline bitmap that you can come back to if you learn a new trick or dedice to tweak further.

The DPP program I mention in another post will convert to Tiff for you. It is quicker than PSP or PS and you can review images (deleting the bad ones) before choosing which one to process.

Howver, your choice of camera default will probably load the image in exactly as you captured it. You could try an experiment. Load in via PS from RAW and magnify until you can see a blow up of each pixel. Then convert using a standalone program, blow up to similar magnification and compare what you see. If they are the same then no additional processing is being performed by PS and you are getting the original RAW.

That sounds like a clever idea James.
I'll give that a try.
Thanks!
