Who says dobs are no good for astrophotography

Have a look at the photos in the link below. They were taken by Alex Cherney (who is in my local club) using an SDM 22" dob with a servocat and a Sony mirrorless camera.
Pretty awesome for 8-15 second exposures. Aperture rules here.

Dave L, you should give this a go sometime, its the same setup as your 20"

Those photos are absolutely amazing for the very short exposures involved - Orion nebula in 9 x 8 sec!!!

They definitely fall into the category of "things that make you go Hmmm"! I guess a 22" f/3.6 scope is neither cheap, nor low maintenance, but the possibilities are awesome. I fear that you may have infected these boards with a new variant of the aperture fever virus.

It has crossed my mind and is one of the things I'm going to try with the 300D in the not too distant future when I set up a way of having the camera up there.
The shots are spectacular, especially more so given the exposure times, the views through the 20" on alot of the objects are photographic and seeing the horsehead has almost become routine.
If only we had an omega centauri up here

I can't speak for large dob owners but
if I owned one I'd give imaging like this a
try just out of curiosity but when you get
almost photographic views
at the eyepiece you'd more than likely
prefer your eye on the eyepiece
insted of a camera.

Having looked through a 22" F3.6 Dob I tend to agree. I was impressed by the Sony Nex-5 camera though. Not expensive either.
