CCD camera advice was created by michaeloconnell
There is a possibility I *may* be visiting the US later this year and with the currency exchange right now, I would like to pick up a few astro toys. A CCD camera comes to mind.
First off, it will be ABG and Mono and will go on the TEC140.
TEC140 is good up to a diagonal dimension of 20mm before the field flattener is required.

The cameras with the KAF8300 chip are proving very popular at the moment and appear good value for money.
The ST-8300M looks tempting.
Chip dimensions: 3326 x 2507 pixels. 5.4 x 5.4 pixels. 18mm x 13.5mm. Diagonal dimension = 22.5mm. Resolution: 1.14 arec/pixel, which is a little OTT IMHO.
I Could bin 2 x 2: 1663 x 1253 pixels; 10.8 pixel size equivalent; 2.28 arcsec/pixel.
To be honest, even at that size, it's still waaayy too big for a monitor and would need to be cropped or scaled down in resolution before it could be viewed on the web.

What are the thoughts of others here?
Other cameras worth considering?

Michael.

Michael,

One thing to keep in mind is that, for photometry, it is better (but not absolutely neccessary) to have a NABG chip, as it increase the range the CCD response is linear.

For pretty pictures, software can always fix any blooming.

I already have an SBIG ST8XME which I plan to use on the 16" for astrometry and photometry. This second camera would be for the pretty pics etc.
