question re ir filter for solar imaging was created by Frank Ryan
Im planning to try some solar webcam imaging
with an spc900 in white light.
I have the standard IR filter on the cam
for planetary/lunar imaging.
Just wondering is it helpful still for solar?
I have also a contininum filter and
was trying to figure out what the combination of both would be like.
Any advice is welcome.
thanks.

Hi Frank,
Definitely use an IR block if your going to look through the eyepiece as the Continuum does not block IR at all.
What frontside filter will you be using? If it's ND3.8 you definitely need IR block + an ND filter if used visually.
With ND5 you'll need IR block visually but will not need a separate ND filter on the eyepiece side.
As far as I remember I was using Baader ND3.8 Astrosolar + Continuum + IR + a light ND filter on my televue Ranger (70mm). For imaging I dropped the ND but left the IR block in there - I'm not certain if I needed to though.

Thanks Trevor.
The front filters a homemade baddar
using photographic grade film.
then eyepiece side a stack of an IR with a contininum.
then the webcam.

yea, apparantly always use a IR blocking filter of some sorts when webcamming as the IR picked up by the camera mushes up the image somewhat. double stacking IR filters is no harm.

Also worth considering a TiO filter.
These are relatively new.
Just received one myself - not fully tried in anger yet.
Many of the guys on Cloudy Nights are using this filter now.
Filter can be bought on ebay from "bjomejag"
* Optical Interference Filter 705BP10 25mm Infrared
and
* Eyepiece Filter Mount 28mm threaded for filters

It says in CN that its wavelenght is centered on longer wavelength, so is the
Sun red/redder through this filter?
