Think before you buy a Canon was created by manic_dave
I got myself an 1100d DSLR Camera from Currys.

On arriving home i discover that the lens in the box is not the one in the instruction book.

The one i got has no IS switch.

so Currys being Currys tell me to contact Canon.

so i drop them an email after being on hold for 45 mins.

what do they tell me!

well i should sell the one i have on Ebay and then buy the one i want!

i shit you not.

"Should you have bought the lens more recently, you might want to talk to your retailer on possibly swapping the lens to an IS version.
Other possibilities are to possibly sell off the lens as a second hand through websites like e-bay or such. The good thing about this is that lenses do tend to remain valuable even when they are getting somewhat older. Once sold off you would be able to obtain the item you prefer over the lens in use with you now.
I hope this answer will be able to assist you. If you might have any other Canon related question, please do not hesitate to contact us again.
Yours sincerely, "

great support from Canon !

The manual tells you how to use your camera with a wide range of other extras and accessories that may not necessarily be included in the box , BUT did it say on the box that the lens enclosed has 'IS'? or did Curry's say 'Yes the lens enclosed has IS'?

If they did then you have a valid claim and in my opinion could be a simple win in the small claims court.

Hi Graham,

yes one of the reasons i got it was the IS function. the manual makes not mention of any other models or lens that comes with the Camera.

the lens i got is from the last generation of cameras 1000d.

even in this months Digital Camera Mag, they have a review of the camera and it shows the lens that comes as standard!

Im going to contact the Irish office tomorrow.

I work in the media, and our consumer affairs guy thinks the same as you. either they give me the correct lens or its small claims court and publicity.

but what galls me is them telling me to sell it on ebay.

I wonder would Nikon have told me that

See if you can dig out the original box and see if it says on the box 'Contains xxx IS'.

The key to the entire argument is the wording on the box that had the wrong contents or miss-sold by Currys.

eBay would give you a better chance at the most money, retailers are rarely interested in trade-ins with an entry level lens.

Also keep copies of all the adds you read in the magazines just in case.

Hope it all works out!! Canon's are great but certainly not cheap to let errors slide!!

I would have believed that if the product is not what is advertised you are entitled to a replacement or a refund.

I would take it back to Currys, it is clearly not your fault that the wrong lens was packed in the box, it is not Currys fault either, but they should give you a replacement and send the incorrect box and lens back to Canon.

Do you still have the original box and everything that came with it?

I found this on the Citizens Information website that might help.

What is a contract?

A contract is a formal agreement between two or more people that is enforceable by law. When you buy goods or services you enter into a contract with the seller. Contracts are made up of terms; some of which can be implied terms. Contracts may be written or oral. It is easier to know what the terms are in a written contract but an oral contract is also enforceable in law. Contracts may differ in many ways and there are no hard and fast rules governing what terms should be in a consumer contract. Terms in consumer contracts must always be fair and clear to the consumer. The following general rules apply to consumer contracts.

Consumer contracts are protected by the Sale of Goods and Supply of Services Act, 1980.

Under this Act the purchaser of goods has a number of rights -
the main ones are •Goods must be of merchantable quality – goods should be of reasonable quality taking into account what they are meant to do, their durability and their price
•Goods must be fit for their purpose – they must do what they are reasonably expected to do
•Goods must be as described - the buyer must not be mislead into buying something by the description of goods or services given orally by a salesperson or an advertisement.

When you buy goods in a sale you have the same rights as when you pay full price for the goods

It's especially interesting that goods must be as described.

Hope this helps.
