If you use the camera with your laptop then you will just need a USB cable as BackyardEOS and the like (EOS Utility also possibly) can control the camera.
If you are not using a laptop then you will need it to do exposures more than 30s. Having an intervalometer to take several shots one after the other automatically while you go get a mug of tea is also helpful! The cheapest are on ebay, but of very varying quality.
