12V power supply for powered usb hub? was created by mikematthews
Hi guys, wonder if anyone can help me out with this one.

I'm using a usb hub for a few devices when imaging, however my netbook can't supply enough power for all items through one usb port. I need to source a regulated power supply that I can run off my powertank.

I've seen the same issue brought up over on the stargazer's lounge and this item was recommended as a solution. It certainly seems ideal for the job. The only snag is that site is charging £22 to deliver it to Ireland which is more than a little off-putting. (They will only deliver by courier, not by post.)

Not having much luck finding another seller and wondered if any of you guys had to buy something similar and what solution did you go with?

I'm going to say something you won't like but even here in 'the UK', i.e., N. Ireland we have to regularly put up with £15+ postage costs thanks to companies who only use couriers. Some won't even deliver to non-mainland locations.

I couldn't see anything equivalent on the Maplin website but Farnell generally have cheap (or free) postage:

Strictly speaking one could build a cheap 12v to 5v converter using an L7805 high current regulator for a couple of euro/GBP and plug it into a standard USB hub power socket. Very much depends on one's level of comfort building circuits though.

Thats a nifty device, but like Martinus says, a simple DC-DC regulated 12v to 5v converter would do,
You could probably find one in maplin, but they're the last resort for me as I usually find them expensive for everything, but are great if you need something NOW.

IF you see one on ebay from the uk, you could use parcelmotel to have it shipped to their NI address and parcelmotel ship it to you for 3.5e, cheaper then the usual international shipping costs. I use parcelmotel for all uk sourced ebay purchases, saved me a fortune.

other then that, bite the bullet and pay for it..

Thanks guys. I think I'll suck it up and pay for the delivery - it's just too nifty a little device to pass up.
