Any chance that they could be artifacts left after the removal of some trails of foreground objects, maybe KEBO's or something? M101 is a long way from the ecliptic but then KEBOs are not confined to the ecliptic??? There are a lot of them though...:

I've been thinking about jets and overlapping images. I don't know how many were used for this monster, but the Spizer image of the LMC combined 300,000 separate photos into one 59 meg 13,250 pixel square image.
Could the jets here simply be areas where there was an undlap of images so that you got a small area out of focus because it did not have enough video information to give better detail?
