Hey woodwizard i really like the image nice to see an old favourite in a different light.As you suggested it is over processed a little bit and the usuall problem of overexposing the trapezium while trying to get detail from the fainter surroundings.Here's a link that you may find useful in overcoming this problem

Dogstar, I know the trap is blown out as this is 6-10 min exposures in H-Alpha. Here is a Trap photo from last year.
What I meant by over processed is the stars have dark donuts around them.

Its a very good image there Tom.
Would you consider darkening the background (yellow M42) a tad, it might bring out the nebula even more....

Dave, the yellowish M42 is the native colour using the Baader 7nm H-Alpha filter and Canon 350D modified in B/W mode. The colour was not adjusted in the processing.
Will be giving it a go with another processing when I get home from work.
