Keith you were so close!!!!!! it is a bitter sweet taste indeed but if anything it provides more motivation to keep looking and when we observe it..it reminds us of why we do these things in the first place. I understand exactly how you feel as a number of years ago i missed out on 2 very possible comet discoveries, one due to weather and the other due to laziness and i feel certain had those factors not been in place then i would have found these 2 comets..what a mixture of heart break but also excitment!

Cant wait to observe RS

Clear skies and good luck with your search :D

Anyone want to save me actually doing some research and explain what type of variable it is? What causes the outbursts? And what causes the pattern that we observe? In 20 pages or less, spare me the full stellar evolution lesson!

Cheers,

Got a great look at RS OPH this morning from 5-6am, what a great sight to actually see it for the very 1st time in outburst after sooo many times looking over the years, it felt really weird :P

It was yellow-white in colour, and i estimated it to be at magnitude 5.6 - 5.7
so it's already fading as this is a 'fast' nova.....

More info here: www.aavso.org/vstar/vsots/0500.shtml

Anybody else get a look?
Keith..
