I find amount of "twinkle" to be a good indicator of how poor the seeing will be on that particular night.


Did I not read someone drew up a 'twinkle' scale to measure this?

Oddly enough,
I have seen some nights where the twinkling was 'bad' but
the seeing was good!?
Wonder why?

Anyway,
Saturn,
The lads are bang on,
It's the atmosphere.
Making the starlight 'wobble'
(like heat waves in summer on the road)

Anytime Venus or Sirius are near the horizon
the amount of UFO sightings dramatically increase!

Funny one Dave Lillis told me anbout;

Caller to evening radio show in Dublin:
''Ya, howerya, I'm lookin' at a UFO!''

DJ;
''Ok caller, where do you see it?''

Caller:
''Its hoverin' over the houses in da East!''

DJ;
''Oh OK! That's Sirius!''

Caller;
''I know it's bleedin' serious, isn't that why I'm callin' ya!''

Signal to noise. If you have a good night then even slight air currents will cause the stars to 'twinkle'. At the other extreme you can see stars in a light fog, but they may not 'twinkle' at all.

When the stars be twinkling...its a bad night to go observing (so i hear).

But as stated.........they dont twinkle in the scope..........its the planets that do....i find.

But you have to take what you can get.

No twinkling tonight.
