AAVSO Special Notice #95
SN 2008Q in NGC 524
February 5, 2008
Supernova 2008Q (Villi et al. 2008, CBET #1228; Stanishev 2008,
CBET #1232) is a bright supernova of type-Ia in the S0 galaxy
NGC 524. On 2008 January 29, Stanishev classified this as
a type-Ia approximately one week prior to maximum. Stan
Howerton (Arkansas City, Kansas) reports an estimate for
SN 2008Q at m(vis) = 13.7 on the night of 2008 February 4/5
local time (approximate JD 2454501.75). Further observations
of this type-Ia supernova are encouraged.
SN 2008Q is located at RA: 1 24 57.23 , Dec: +9 33 01.5 (J2000)
Comparison stars are available for this field, and charts may be
plotted using VSP and the coordinates above:
www.aavso.org/observing/charts/vsp/
This object is not currently in VSX but will be searchable shortly
with the "SN 2008Q", and data should be submitted with this name.

Just noticed Neills post on the February sky notes..
So maybe a comet and a supernova in the one image.. now there is a challenge..
Here are some close encounters for the comets this month with DSO's.
Date Time (UT) Dist. (deg) Comet Mag. Target Type Con
Feb. 5 19h 0.55 46P/Wirtanen 8.6 NGC 524 galaxy Pisces
